This dance sequence, taken from the 1943 film ‘Stormy Weather’, is introduced by the jazz singer Cab Calloway. The Nicholas Brothers jump in around the 1:30 mark, and then the fun really begins. Fred Astaire watched this footage and famously said, “This is the greatest movie musical sequence I have ever seen.”
Nicholas Brothers, a team of dancing brothers, Fayard (1914-2006) and Harold (1921-2000), were totally self-taught, but many people assumed they were classically trained ballet dancers. Considered my many to be the greatest tap dancers of their day, they performed a highly acrobatic technique known as “flash dancing”.
